Your Guide To The Business Basics Grants Program

In May 2021, the Queensland Department of Employment, Small Business and Training announced a new initiative to drive the growth of small business in the state, aptly titled the Business Basics Grants Program.

The concept of the Business Basics Grants Program is to issue funding of up to $5000 to support new and emerging businesses with less than twenty employees, in order to increase core capabilities and adopt current best practices. Successful applicants can use the grant for website development and upgrades, strategic marketing, training and coaching, advisory services, and planning for business continuity and succession.

In turn, the Business Basics Grants Program will not fund the following -

  • Activities bought using cryptocurrencies, barter, or services in-kind

  • General business operating costs (such as bookkeeping or accounting, tax returns)

  • Real estate or property hire, lease, or rental fees

  • Goods, services, or fees from related parties (including companies with common shareholdings or directors, employees or immediate family)

  • Travel

  • Franchise fees

  • Purchase of stock

  • GST, registration, and fees

  • General maintenance of existing digital technologies

  • Computer hardware (such as computer servers, PCs, tablets, mobile phones)

  • Activities purchased via direct selling (by party plan or network marketing)

  • Delivery, credit card and transaction fees

  • Memberships and joining fees

  • Salaries

  • Fleet vehicles

  • Website hosting

  • Advertising campaign delivery (e.g. Google AdWords, Facebook advertising or similar expenses)

In order to qualify or to be eligible for the Business Basics Grants Program, the business applying for the grant must:

  • Have fewer than twenty employees at the time of applying for the grant

  • Have an active Australian Business Number (ABN) and be registered for GST

  • Have a Queensland headquarters

  • Have a turnover of $300, 000 or less for the current financial year

  • Not be insolvent or have owners/directors that are an undischarged bankrupt

Applications for the Business Basics Grants Program will open on May 31, 2021. Applications will close when the Queensland Department of Employment, Small Business and Training receive sufficient applications for a competitive assessment, or on June 30, 2021 - whichever should happen first.
