Celebrating QLD Small Business Month

While it's no secret that many operators have taken many hits in recent times, QLD Small Business Month was an opportunity to celebrate the community's wins. Although the entire nation has had a difficult two years trying to navigate one “unprecedented event” after another, Brisbane small business owners have had it particularly tough. From back to back floods to snap lockdowns, it hasn’t been as easy to make a living as it once was. Despite this, many of us are still standing - and have no intentions on going anywhere. As a tribute to this ingrained resilience, QLD Small Business Month celebrated how these small scale enterprises often form the heart and soul of their communities. 

QLD Small Business Month in Review

The 2022 QLD Small Business Month 2022 not only acknowledged the vital contribution small businesses make in driving our economy, creating local jobs and building strong communities, but draws attention to the unique challenges they face as well. 

Throughout the month of May, the Queensland Government and its partners ran a series of events across the state to celebrate our diverse small businesses and connected them to support, grants and partnerships that will help them thrive.

In a recent press release, Minister for Employment and Small Business Di Farmer said the focus will be on encouraging Queenslanders to support small businesses that make invaluable contributions to their local communities. 

“After a tough two years, our small businesses deserve to celebrate and to welcome more customers through their doors. Queensland Small Business Month highlights to communities across the state that small businesses are an important factor in the state’s economy,” Minister Farmer said. 

“During Queensland Small Business Month, there were expos, networking opportunities and procurement workshops, Indigenous and multicultural business events and forums, along with a celebration of the Mentoring For Growth program’s 20th anniversary.”

There are now more than 448, 000 small businesses operating in Queensland. Many locals are often surprised to learn that they also account for 97% of the business sector, and contribute roughly $117 billion dollars to the state’s economy.

For Brisbane small business owners, many are all too aware of the power that lies in their community, and how staying connected with each other can benefit everyone. Examples of this philosophy at work is that Canio and Michele, both co-founders of Muro Accounting regularly mentor. Canio is currently a business mentor for the Queensland Government’s “Mentoring For Growth” program whilst Michele is a mentor at the Brisbane Hub.

A major part of this role includes offering his time on a regular basis, to mentor small business owners and start-up founders operating and residing in the Brisbane region. Having the state government put their faith in him is not a responsibility that Canio takes lightly, and uses the role to regularly consult with businesses across Queensland that are either struggling with putting their best foot forward economically, or are in a rapid growth period and need some guidance as to the best way to plan for the future. 

Although Muro services clients from all around Australia, most of their clients are based in the Brisbane catchment, and Canio and Michele have quite literally helped thousands of “Brisbanites” over the course of their career. While their day to day work involves helping Brisbane small business owners navigate accounting and financial planning, they’re also big advocates for making the most of the state funding and programs available to small business owners as well. 

As locals, Michele and Canio have a unique combination of knowledge and skills that people from all walks of life have used accordingly.
